Context

Jordan faces several challenges due to severe water scarcity, with agricultural, industrial, and water drinking demands far exceeding renewable resources. In addition, climate change is expected to increase irregular rainfall patterns, leading to less available freshwater. Therefore, efficient and responsible management of water resources is a high priority. In particular, treated wastewater reuse plays an increasingly important role as water demand and climate impacts rise.

Objective

Water and wastewater resources in Jordan are managed effectively through improved organisational, technical, and personnel skills.

Approach

The project aims to achieve its objective through five areas of activity:

•It integrates and digitalises the Water Authority of Jordan’s quality management system (TSM) to enhance oversight of the water utilities ‘Yarmouk Water Company’, ‘Miyahuna’ and ‘Aqaba Water’ for better wastewater management.

•The project enhances organisational skills at ‘Yarmouk Water Company’ to improve maintenance and repairs of wastewater treatment plants.

•It reduces technical and administrative water losses at ‘Miyahuna’ through a detailed infrastructure plan and advanced water metering systems.

•The project improves technical and management skills at ‘Aqaba Water’ to optimise infrastructure management, boost efficiency, and reduce water losses.

•It enhances wastewater management at Azraq Refugee Camp bysupporting the construction and operation of a treatment facility supplying treated wastewater for agricultural reuse.
