The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Jordan on behalf of the German Federal Government for more than 60 years and has a country office in Amman.
Jordan: between reform drive and pressure on resources
Jordan is a stable country in a region shaken by crises. The government is reforming administration and the private sector and driving digitalisation forward. This is creating new prospects for economic growth.
At the same time, Jordan is one of the world’s most arid countries. The population is growing, energy requirements are rising, and climate change is increasing pressure on natural resources. In addition, unemployment remains an important problem, particularly among young people and women.
Together with Jordanian partners, GIZ is supporting reforms and developing solutions for the country’s key future issues.
Together for a modern Jordan: how GIZ works
In Jordan, GIZ works with state institutions, utilities and the private sector. It focuses on the following areas:
- Digital transformation
- Climate action and environmental protection
- Economic development and employment
GIZ supports Jordan in implementing its Economic Modernisation Vision and in modernising the public sector. It promotes political decisions based on reliable data and improves the quality and accessibility of public services. Furthermore, it develops digital solutions for communication between the state and citizens. Cooperation thus strengthens effective, open and citizen-oriented institutions.
Water scarcity and climate change require networked approaches. Together with partners, GIZ therefore takes a holistic approach to water, energy and climate action. It promotes renewable energies in water management, sets up digital monitoring systems and reforms utilities – with the aim of increasing their efficiency and sustainability. Cooperation conserves natural resources while promoting climate-friendly development.
Jordan needs more jobs and economic growth. Therefore, GIZ provides support in improving the framework conditions for businesses and promoting a competitive private sector. Furthermore, it aligns TVET more closely with the needs of the labour market. There is a particular focus on sectors with potential for success, such as renewable energies, the circular economy and digital services. GIZ also promotes access to the labour market for women, young people and people with disabilities.
