Context:

Migration is a global phenomenon that can present opportunities for individuals and countries of origin and destination. Today, more than 281 million international migrants no longer live in the country of their birth. In addition, more than 62.5 million people worldwide are displaced in their own country.

The decision to migrate depends on the individual and there are many reasons for migrating, such as education and job opportunities or to reunite a family. The impacts of climate change are also forcing more and more people to migrate. A comprehensive approach is therefore required, which takes into account all the phases, directions and types of migration.

Migration as a policy area is developed in cooperation with German development cooperation partner countries, various German ministries, and European and multilateral actors. German development cooperation aims for regular, safe and orderly migration based on the Global Compact for Migration (GCM). Actively contributing to gender equality and strengthening migrants' capacity to act are important aspects of this.

Objective:

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) takes a development-oriented approach in national, European and international migration policy.

Method:

The project advises BMZ on migration issues and strengthens its development-oriented position in national, European and international policy. The aim is to shape migration policy in a way that benefits migrants and countries of origin and destination.

The project contextualises current migration policy debates and works on the practical lessons learned. Advisory services currently focus on regular and fair migration for work and training, cooperation with diasporas, displacement and forced displacement matters, and human mobility in the context of climate change. The project supports an intersectional feminist development policy and is committed to gender equality.
