Context
Many African countries are making significant progress on promoting gender equality and social participation. However, deep-rooted social inequality still remains. This is perpetuated by historical power structures and existing social structures. The situation particularly affects people who are marginalised due to their gender or identity.
Promoting long-term social change requires civil society organisations that advocate for vulnerable groups. These organisations must be given targeted support, as civil society plays a key role in bringing about societal change.
Objective
Local and regional civil society actors are improving social justice and participation in Africa.
Approach
The project supports civil society organisations in various African regions that are actively working to promote social justice. The project operates in the following priority areas:
- It provides needs-based support to enable the organisations to pursue their objectives and activities independently and effectively.
- It focuses on local perspectives in its partnerships and builds on the engagement and expertise of civil society.
- Together with civil society organisations, the project prepares studies and data that provide a scientific basis upon which to advocate for the concerns and rights of the civil society community.
- It assists civil society organisations in networking more closely with one another. The aim is to share tried-and-tested approaches – for example on the gender data gap, inclusion and social participation – and to support their dissemination in Africa.
In this way, the project contributes to strengthening cooperation within civil society and achieving long-term results.
