Context
The effects of climate change, attributable to greenhouse gas emissions, are becoming increasingly visible. Concrete and coherent action on a global level is the only way to mitigate the effects of climate change. In this context, the EU has set out to redouble its climate diplomacy efforts and policy collaborations with major emitters outside of Europe in order to promote the implementation of the Paris Agreement. This has resulted in the establishment of the EU Action "Support to the EUs Bilateral Relations with External Partners on Climate-related Policies and Investment (EUCDs).
Objective
To promote the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement in the context of economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the national agenda of partner countries.
Approach
The Action operates in 10 countries and builds upon and complements climate policy dialogues and cooperation with major EU economies. By fostering exchanges and collaboration among national and sub-national administrations, business communities, academia and civil society stakeholders, the EUCDs programme encourages and assists EU and non-EU major economies in progressing toward the Paris Agreement goals, harnessing international economic and political relations to move collectively in a quicker manner towards its full implementation.
Results
Specifically, the Action aims to (1) Facilitate the exchange on climate policy options, expertise, success stories and good practices between the EU and non-European major economies with a view to enabling policy shifts in partner countries; (2) Advance bilateral trade, investment and innovation in pursuit of the goals of the Paris Agreement; and to (3) Contribute to improving public awareness, including in the business community, of challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
