Context

Political developments, geographical factors and climate change present major challenges for water management in the West Bank. There is not enough water for agriculture. Non-conventional water resources such as treated wastewater and harvested rainwater are therefore vital.

Objective

State and non-state actors are better able to manage non-conventional water resources in an environmentally friendly manner in the long-term.

Approach

The project works in the following areas:

  1. It contributes to the adoption of a strategy for long-term wastewater management by government agencies in various areas. The project organises dialogue events with experts from various fields and assists in preparing regulatory standards and guidelines.
  2. It supports the development of regulatory standards for non-conventional water resources for adoption by the government.
  3. It supports municipalities in implementing good practices.

The project works with experts and managers from the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) and other ministries and institutions. The target populations are the municipalities in the West Bank. The key aspects are:

  • Coordination and dialogue between state and non-state actors
  • Better operational conditions for water management, for example through joint development of specific planning and management tools
  • Improved institutional skills for long-term, environmentally friendly water management in municipalities, for example through training courses
