Context

The Peruvian Government knows that the private sector can contribute significantly to realising climate goals and sustainable development in the country. However, planned contributions by businesses to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) could be more ambitious.

To incentivise businesses, the Peruvian Ministry of Environment (Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, MINAM) and the Ministry of Production (Ministerio de la Producción, PRODUCE) are already using instruments such as environmental awards.

However, support programmes run by PRODUCE and other ministries do not yet include targeted and coordinated investment in low-carbon technologies and practices. For example, there is no coordinated support for key businesses in production, processing and trade or their upstream and downstream small and medium-sized companies.

Objective

The Peruvian Government is increasingly implementing NDC measures that include the use of carbon-neutral technologies and practices in industry, especially in the food, beverage and trade sectors.

Approach

The project advises MINAM on new and improved NDC measures that reduce carbon emissions in business. Eight of the 62 NDC measures coordinated by MINAM include the use of low-carbon technologies.

The project develops and implements technical, economic and financial business models to introduce low-carbon technologies and practices in pilot enterprises.

The project also organises regional learning networks for businesses so that they can share information on technologies and practices.
