Context
Research indicates that children frequently exposed to violence, especially in early life, are more likely to become perpetrators or victims of violence in adulthood. Simultaneously, parents and caregivers affected by interpersonal violence struggle to provide a secure environment for their children. Moreover, patriarchal gender norms and roles significantly contribute to gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa, making violence an accepted method of conflict resolution among many people.
To counter this, promoting positive gender norms and healthy views of masculinity are crucial components of children's development. Implementing gender-responsive approaches within childcare environments can reduce the risk of children experiencing or committing violence in both childhood and adulthood. These approaches also raise awareness of gender equality, helping to build a safer and more inclusive society for future generations.
