Context
The Old and Middle Kingdoms tombs of Qubbet el-Hawa (2,400 to 1,800 BC) and the ancient Egyptian necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa North (2,200 to 1,000 BC) are located on Aswan’s west bank. The surrounding area includes 14 villages with a total of around 20,000 residents from various ethnic backgrounds. However, there are few cultural or economic activities in the villages. The local authorities responsible for protecting the heritage sites do not involve the local population in their activities.
Objective
State, scientific and social stakeholders cooperate more effectively to revitalise the cultural heritage sites on Aswan’s west bank.
Approach
The revitalisation of the cultural heritage sites includes the following measures:
- The project involves local communities in developing and protecting the cultural heritage sites. Awareness-raising and integrative planning measures contribute to a shared sense of purpose for state and local stakeholders. This can activate untapped potential to create local partnerships.
- The project aims to create safe access to the necropolis for visitors. At the same time, an infrastructure for basic tourist services is to be developed to generate income opportunities for local communities.
- Learning materials and informative signage of the site will increase knowledge about the site and link the archaeological finds to issues of topical interest. This will enhance the local cultural heritage and learning opportunities relating to the site.
