Germany has been engaged in international cooperation with Tanzania since 1975. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH opened an office in Dar es Salaam in 1982.

GIZ works with local project partners and, at the regional level, with the East African Community (EAC), based in Arusha.

Tanzania is the second-largest economy in East Africa and has a population of 69 million. The country boasts a diverse culture, geography, and natural resources, as well as a generally peaceful and politically stable environment. Over the past five years, its economy has grown steadily at an average rate of seven per cent. However, gas and other mineral resources are not yet being fully utilised. In the current Five Year Development Plan (2021/22 - 2025/26), the Government is prioritising rapid infrastructure expansion, high-quality livelihoods, peace, stability, unity, and developing a competitive economy capable of producing sustainable growth and shared benefits.

Our work on site: For nature conservation and health

GIZ is working in Tanzania on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and other international partners in the following core areas of cooperation:

  • Conserving nature and natural resources, and biodiversity
  • Health, social protection and population policy
  • Peaceful and inclusive societies, and good governance

In the biodiversity sector, GIZ advises the Tanzania Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT) on implementing the national strategy for managing and mitigating human-wildlife conflicts south of the Nyerere National Park and the Selous Game Reserve in the Ruvuma landscape.

In the health sector, the GIZ works on behalf of BMZ and focuses on providing better access to and improving the quality of health services, particularly for mothers and young children. It also collaborates with the Ministry of Water on developing legislation and management strategies to increase the efficiency of water and wastewater in urban areas in Tanzania.

In other programmes, GIZ works with the National Audit Office of Tanzania on good financial governance. The company also supports efforts to promote access to justice for women and children, and focuses on GBV prevention through various advocacy measures and enhancing access to legal aid services.

GIZ is also working with the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat based in Arusha to fast-track and deepen the EAC integration process by improving the institutional and regulatory framework conditions for regional and continental trade in the EAC. In this context, GIZ also enables public and private sector stakeholders to work together to develop innovative solutions for freer trade and freer movement of goods and services across the region.
