Indonesian SOE Pertamina Enhances Sustainability Commitment through Synergy with GIZ
PRESS RELEASE
Jakarta - Pertamina and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, a German federal government entity focused on international cooperation, officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) 2025 on Monday, December 8, 2025, at the Pertamina Club Building, South Jakarta. The MoU was signed by PT Pertamina (Persero) Finance Director Emma Sri Martini and Country Director GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN, Hans-Ludwig Bruns, witnessed by Director Energy Program GIZ Indonesia & ASEAN, Elisabeth Tinschert. This cooperation is part of the bilateral cooperation framework between the governments of Indonesia and the Federal Republic of Germany.
This collaboration is an initiative and form of synergy between the Grant Management - Investor Relations Function, together with project owners at Pertamina, grant providers, and other relevant stakeholders, including the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, as a form of support through a G2G scheme that can provide grant support to Pertamina in line with the sustainability and energy transition initiatives at Pertamina Group. The signing of the MoU marks the continuation of the synergy between Pertamina and GIZ, which began in 2024, through the Directorate General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, to support the Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Utilization program at Pondok Cabe Airport and expanded with a new program proposal in 2025.
This initiative includes the continuation of decarbonization and energy efficiency implementation, green infrastructure development/energy transition. In addition, the scope of cooperation has also been expanded to include not only energy transition, but also sustainable infrastructure development, assistance related to sustainable financing from international institutions, climate and environmental protection, green economy, and sustainability.
PT Pertamina (Persero) Finance Director Emma Sri Martini expressed her highest appreciation to GIZ for the synergy and strategic collaboration that has been established in the joint effort to advance sustainability programs focused on energy transition and strengthening Pertamina's social development.
"The support we hope to receive from this collaboration can be divided into two aspects, namely programs related to decarbonization and low-carbon businesses. Our challenge at Pertamina is how to optimize domestic resources while reducing carbon emissions. Pertamina's mission, which is to ensure our energy supply, is a top priority, but we must also be able to reduce our carbon emissions. This is a mandate given by the government to Pertamina as a national oil company to optimize Indonesia's resource potential in order to carry out these missions," said Emma.
Pertamina also considers GIZ a strategic partner due to its status as a German semi-governmental agency with extensive access to international funding sources. This collaboration is expected to pave the way for Pertamina to move towards green financing and various funding schemes with risk reduction facilities needed by green projects that are not yet fully commercially viable.
"Pertamina has many initiatives and aspirations that can be realized under this cooperation. With this MoU, Pertamina and GIZ are optimistic that they can strengthen the national energy transition ecosystem while promoting the creation of new low-carbon business models that are highly competitive globally," added Emma.
GIZ Country Director for Indonesia ASEAN, Hans-Ludwig Bruns, welcomed the collaboration with Pertamina positively. This is because both GIZ and Pertamina share the same vision on energy transition and green energy. Previously, GIZ had also collaborated with several Pertamina subsidiaries, such as in the health and energy sectors.
“We welcome PERTAMINA's initiative to establish cooperation in sustainable projects. We are committed to supporting technical studies, capacity building, and facilitating the necessary technology to help make the Pertamina Group a pioneer in energy transition and sustainable development in Indonesia," said Hans-Ludwig-Bruns.
Pertamina remains committed to accelerating the energy transition by implementing sustainability programs in order to achieve the Indonesian government's Net Zero Emissions target by 2060. The company recognizes the importance of collaborating with various stakeholders, including the government, the private sector, and international institutions such as GIZ, to overcome challenges and ensure the timely and effective implementation of initiatives.
Meanwhile, Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina (Persero) Muhammad Baron appreciates development projects in the energy efficiency and green infrastructure and/or energy transition sectors as a form of sustainability efforts at Pertamina.
“Pertamina, together with its subsidiaries, plays an active role in carrying out initiatives that have a direct impact on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Baron.
These efforts are also in line with the implementation of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.
