A high-level delegation from the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), led by Minister Hilton T. Kendall, concluded a landmark visit to Pohnpei State aimed at enhancing regional cooperation on sustainable maritime development and inter-island connectivity. Supported by GIZ Pacific's Low Carbon Sea Transport (LCST) Project, the visit builds on previous regional discussions and focuses on addressing climate and logistical challenges in Pacific shipping.

Key outcomes included a special session on May 13 with the Pohnpei State Legislature, where the delegation presented a proposed trial of the low-emission sailing cargo vessel SV Juren Ae. On May 15, a Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed by representatives from Pohnpei, RMI, and the LCST project to collaborate on the vessel's trial and potential acquisition. The LoI outlines a transport study, shared funding, and coordinated technical support to explore acquiring a similar vessel for Pohnpei.

The GIZ Pacific-supported initiative aligns with broader goals for climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable livelihoods. The visit concluded with plans for a joint technical mission to South Korea in June, where officials will work with shipbuilders on customizing a wind-assisted cargo vessel for the region.
