SOMACORE Consortium Partners Strengthen Regional Cooperation and Results-based Implementation in Indonesia

Partners of the GIZ-implemented Solutions for Marine and Coastal Resilience (SOMACORE) Project convened in Alor Island, Indonesia, April 20-24, for the annual Coordination Committee Meeting, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and advancing results-based marine conservation across the Coral Triangle.

Supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUKN) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI), SOMACORE is implemented by a consortium of 12 organizations working across key marine seascapes in Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and Solomon Islands.

The meeting brought together consortium partners, technical experts, and practitioners to review implementation progress, align priorities for 2026, and strengthen collaboration across the Lesser Sunda Seascape (LSS), Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape (SSS), and Bismarck Solomon Seas Ecoregion (BSSE).

Discussions focused on accelerating implementation and strengthening measurable conservation outcomes through improved governance, knowledge sharing, and regional coordination. Partners highlighted the importance of translating policy and capacity-building efforts into tangible impacts for marine ecosystems and coastal communities.

The consortium also emphasized the role of regional learning and knowledge platforms such as PANORAMA in documenting and scaling effective conservation solutions across the Coral Triangle. Discussions further explored opportunities to strengthen marine spatial planning, transboundary cooperation, and inclusive approaches to seascape governance.

The meeting concluded with renewed commitments to strengthen collaboration, accelerate implementation, and advance integrated approaches that contribute to resilient marine ecosystems and sustainable coastal livelihoods in one of the world’s most biodiverse marine regions.
