Held at the GIZ Representation, this year’s event provided an opportunity to reflect on the state of European international cooperation and explore how Team Europe can work together to lead in the face of shifting geopolitical dynamics and growing global challenges. It was more than just a reception; it was a moment to pause and consider the future of global development and our collective role in shaping it.

The event was opened by the Brussels Representation Director Reinhold Elges, followed by opening remarks from Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel, Chair of the GIZ Management Board. His address centered on the idea that in these times of geopolitical shifts, our commitment to international cooperation is crucial and local partnerships are key to delivering impactful solutions. By understanding local needs and pooling resources, we maximize our effectiveness and align with EU priorities. Mr. Schäfer-Gümbel also reflected on the crucial importance of Team Europe and of the needed synergy between GIZ, the German government, the European institutions, European Member States, development banks, and the European private sector to tackle the complex challenges of our modern world.

These partnerships are also what is needed to bring Global Gateway from start-up to scale-up.The evening reinforced that, now more than ever, international cooperation is essential to build a sustainable and inclusive future. GIZ is committed to continue working together with its many German, European and global partners to achieve this.

A powerful keynote speech from Hildegard Bentele

One of the highlights of the Reception was the inspiring keynote speech delivered by Hildegard Bentele, Vice Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development (DEVE). Her message couldn’t have been more timely: the current global landscape calls for Europe to reaffirm its commitment to international cooperation, not just as a political tool, but as an investment in shared prosperity, growth and security. Turning inward in the face of geopolitical pressures is not an option.

She emphasised the importance of aligning international cooperation with broader EU policy areas, such as trade and migration. In her words, this alignment is essential for Europe to remain a relevant global partner and to stay impactful in the face of increasing geopolitical competition. It is also key for the success of Global Gateway.

A Networking Opportunity for Meaningful Dialogue

One of the key aspects of the GIZ Brussels Annual Reception is the chance to connect with some of the most influential players in the European international cooperation space. The event was attended by European Commission officials, think tanks, European Member State organisations and fellow members of the Practitioners’ Network for European Development Cooperation, public development banks and development finance institutions, and the European private sector. The Reception provided a platform for high-level exchanges and engaging conversations between partners and friends – both old and new.
