Context
Tunisia is facing increasing water scarcity. This situation is exacerbated by regional disparities in water availability, recurring droughts and the overexploitation of groundwater. Inappropriate agricultural practices and poor management of natural resources further worsen the situation. In addition, the legal framework is inadequately implemented, and there is a lack of coordination among the stakeholders involved.
Objective
The management of natural resources has improved and been adapted to climate change.
Approach
The project supports local agricultural organisations, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and farmers in implementing agricultural measures and best practices aimed at promoting the retention of rainwater and groundwater in the soil (so-called “green water”) and protecting the land. It assists the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture in expanding and improving data on green water. The project also provides a support programme and specialised trainings for companies and individuals, thereby promoting economic opportunities and jobs related to natural resources.
The project also advises the Tunisian Ministry of Environment and contributes to creating favourable legal conditions for ecological transformation. It supports civil society in participating in environmental and climate protection efforts in cooperation with environmental authorities. In doing so, it follows an approach that considers gender-specific perspectives and the needs of disadvantaged groups.
