Context
Tunisia is facing increasing water scarcity. The issue is exacerbated by regional imbalances in water resources, recurring droughts and groundwater overuse. Inappropriate agricultural practices and poor management of natural resources are further compounding the situation. Moreover, legal frameworks are insufficiently implemented and there is a lack of coordination between the stakeholders involved.
Objective
Natural resource management has improved and been adapted to climate change.
Approach
The project supports local agricultural organisations, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and farmers in implementing agricultural measures and best practices to use rainwater and groundwater (green water) and to protect soils. It is helping the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture to expand and improve green water data. The project also provides a support programme and specialised training for companies and individuals to promote economic opportunities and jobs related to natural resources.
The project also advises the Tunisian Ministry of Environment and contributes to creating favourable legal conditions for the green transition. It supports civil society in participating in environmental and climate protection measures in cooperation with the environmental authorities. The project pursues an approach that reflects gender-specific perspectives and the needs of disadvantaged groups.
