Context
Mauritania is aiming to become a hub for green hydrogen (gH2). To achieve this, it wants to produce hydrogen, as well as derivatives such as ammonia or methanol, for domestic use and for export. A large and competitive hydrogen industry will promote the country’s long-term economic, social and environmental development.
To produce gH2, Mauritania needs to build huge power plants based on renewable energy sources. Major foreign investors are already drawing up ambitious plans. Yet the framework conditions for a gH2 economy are still inadequate.
Objective
The political, legal, institutional and technical framework for the environmentally and socially sustainable development of the gH2 economy in Mauritania has improved, resulting in significant investment by major foreign investors.
Approach
The project supports state representatives and institutions in Mauritania.
It trains and advises specialists and managers on subjects such as how they negotiate with investors and integrate local companies into the hydrogen economy. The project also provides advice on creating jobs in the hydrogen economy and updating vocational education and training in this context.
It also supports state decision-makers in communicating transparently with all groups in society and involving them in the development process.
In addition, the project provides advice on the structure of public organisations to enable them to promote gH2.
It also works with state representatives to develop regulations, social and environmental standards and networks to expand gH2 and disseminate knowledge.
