Communicating the energy transition around the world

Context

A fundamental transformation of the world’s energy systems is necessary if climate change is to be stopped. For this reason, the global energy transition has become one of the most important fields of action in foreign policy and diplomacy, and one that is determined very much by political discourse in this sector. As an established pioneer in this area, Germany has an important role to play.

Objective

The energy transition is a greater priority in public debate in target countries. International knowledge transfer and dialogue have been stepped up and the energy transition has been embedded in the international agenda.

Approach

The project advises and provides information to the German Federal Foreign Office and German missions abroad on how they can incorporate important issues relating to the global energy transition into their own foreign-policy approaches.

The project comprises four fields of action. The core element is a travelling exhibition that increases public awareness of the energy transition and of energy-policy debates. In addition, the project supports the Federal Foreign Office in promoting the energy transition in its foreign policy.

In parallel, the project provides advice on relevant areas and fields of action in German foreign policy. These include the sustainable transformation of the transport sector and efforts to ensure a just transition, which focuses on social justice in the context of the energy transition.

The project reaches out to young journalists and influencers with the aim of fostering a lively debate on energy policy. They receive a stipend to enable them to participate in the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue.
