Context:

The East African Community (EAC) is one of the fastest-growing economic regions in Africa. Despite digital advancements, higher education and research face significant challenges. STEM education lacks practical orientation, collaboration with industries is insufficient, and women are severely underrepresented in technology-related programs. Additionally, harmonized standards and policies for the sustainable use of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) are missing. This limits regional integration and innovation potential across the EAC.

Objective:

The project aims to strengthen higher education and research in the EAC by promoting practice-oriented study programs and application-driven research in emerging technologies. It will also improve collaboration between universities, research institutions, businesses, and policymakers. A particular focus is on gender equity and integrating AI-driven innovation into economically relevant sectors.

Approach:

The project establishes a regional alliance between universities, businesses, and policymakers to develop practice-oriented educational programs. IUCEA and EASTECO coordinate the alliance, harmonizing curricula, promoting AI and digital skills research, and integrating businesses into academic training. Additionally, policymakers receive support in developing a gender-sensitive and practice-oriented AI policy. Through training, regional collaborations, and joint projects, the sustainable integration of digital technologies into higher education will be fostered.
