Context
Industry and transport worldwide require hydrogen, but its production produces significant amounts of carbon dioxide. Green hydrogen (gH2) is regarded as a climate-friendly alternative because it is produced from renewable energy sources.
Egypt has laid important foundations for producing and trading in green hydrogen. The Egyptian Government is pursuing a hydrogen strategy and wants to create incentives for companies to produce green hydrogen. The country aims to develop into a regional gH2 hub and cover five to eight per cent of the global gH2 market by 2040.
Germany has an interest in green hydrogen and its by-products, such as ammonia and methanol. Cooperation with Egypt is therefore important for green hydrogen trade between the two countries.
