Context
A core aim of Togo’s government is to provide secure incomes and better job opportunities for women and vulnerable groups. However, the reality remains challenging, and the rate of poverty is very high.
Women are particularly affected: 30 per cent are underemployed and many work without pay and have only limited access to vocational training. The majority of the population has no social security to cushion economic crises.
The government has several strategies to support women and disadvantaged groups. The programmes are designed to support equal opportunities, improve social security and make the labour market accessible to all.
Objective
Training, employment and income programmes, particularly for women and vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, have improved in Togo.
Approach
The project has four key priorities:
Together with the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Dialogue, it develops national strategies to create more jobs in Togo and improve working conditions.
Through measures such as childcare and accessibility in vocational schools, women and vulnerable groups gain better opportunities for professional qualifications.
Special training promotes entrepreneurial skills and economic independence among women and disadvantaged groups.
The project supports governmental and non-governmental organisations in including women and disadvantaged groups in decisions related to the labour market. Those concerned also acquire personal skills to increase their ability to assert themselves and participate in decision-making.
