Context

Health care in Togo is influenced by gender-based inequalities and inadequate health services. In addition, the health system is underfunded, meaning that health centres are not adequately maintained. In some cases, there is a lack of staff and medication. All of this impairs the quality of care.

Objective

Local, regional and national actors in the health system ensure that the sexual and reproductive rights (SRHR) of the Togolese population are implemented.

Approach

The project enables high-quality and needs-based services for sexual and reproductive health. It achieves this by developing the skills of experts and managers in the health system and building on successful approaches. By taking the decentralisation process into account, the project creates synergies with other projects to support the municipalities more efficiently.

Furthermore the project aims to better prepare the health system for climate change and pandemics. To this end, it promotes the development of skills and transfer of knowledge and improves communication with the communities. By working closely with laboratories in rural areas, it improves the management of infectious diseases.

The project is also implementing additional measures with its cooperation partners:

  • In partnership with the Green Climate Fund, it is developing a project proposal on climate change and its impact on the health system in Togo
  • The GFA Consulting Group is supporting quality management in the Centrale Region and promoting local actors in three regions in the areas of SRHR, gender and nutrition
  • Another consulting company is developing maintenance systems for appliances and infrastructure
  • The project is providing financial support to the regional health authorities of Centrale, Kara and Savanes to improve quality management and maintenance
  • Through Plan International, the project offers integrated support for survivors of gender-based violence.
