Initial Situation:

As part of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and other international agreements, Germany has made a commitment to pursue policy coherence in its approach to development work. Coherence means here taking a consistent approach, with the aim of achieving more effective policy results.

Ensuring coherence between development policy and other areas of policy-making is therefore a long-term objective of the German Government. Implementing measures in partnership with other areas of work encourages more consistent approaches to global challenges. In addition, it enhances political credibility in international processes and in the partner countries of German development policy.

Objective:

Cooperation between German ministries on development policy is improved and their coherent policy approach advances long-term development.

Approach:

The project improves the dialogue between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and other relevant ministries. In addition, it promotes supraregional dialogue on global development challenges involving various areas of policy-making. The project has implemented two measures so far:

• German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA) – Strengthening development cooperation partnerships for global health research

The project organises dialogues to promote international partnerships for health research.

• Urban innovation made in Africa – sustainable planning and building

The project also organises dialogues to promote approaches and strategies with regard to long-term planning and building. This aims to enhance cooperation with international development agencies, global networks and partner countries in this context. In Rwanda, the project is trialling collaborative processes for defining requirements for needs-based, gender-equitable, climate-friendly and financially viable construction solutions.
