Initial situation (What?)

The world population is expected to grow by two billion people by 2050. How large this increase will actually be depends largely on access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

If women can make self-determined decisions about their lives, their chances on education and career prospects increase. They then often opt for more conscious family planning and have fewer children or have them later.

These demographic changes have an impact on global challenges such as poverty reduction, food security, infrastructure development and environmental and climate protection.

Objective (Why and for what purpose?)

Access to SRHR services is improved and population dynamics are integrated into development policy strategies and measures.

Procedure (How? Who? Where?)

The project supports the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in designing and implementing a development policy that promotes SRHR and takes account of trends in demographic development.

The focal points of the advisory services include

- advancing the sexual and reproductive rights of women and other vulnerable groups

- promoting self-determined family planning

- improving the provision of and access to sexual and reproductive health services

To this end, the project works with partners from politics, civil society and international organizations, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children and Adolescents (GFF).

In addition, the project gathers practical experience from projects and incorporates this into its advisory services.

In order to promote the right to physical self-determination, reproductive health and gender equality in the long term, the project also helps the BMZ to represent its positions in international negotiations on the basis of evidence.
