Context
More than half of the Libyan population is under the age of 30. Armed conflict and political instability are making it more difficult for young people, particularly young women, to participate in social and economic life, however.
There is a lack of safe spaces in which young people can develop their potential. In addition, employment options are greatly limited due to a youth unemployment rate of more than 50 per cent. Moreover, young women in particular are subject to multiple discrimination as a result of traditional norms.
Objective
Young people, particularly women, are empowered to take part in economic and social life autonomously and to play an active role in the peaceful development of their communities.
Approach
The project has three priority areas:
-
Economic participation
Employment promotion measures such as career guidance, start-up training courses and internship programmes make it easier for young people to become integrated into the labour market. In addition, the project implements measures that specifically promote young women’s economic participation. -
Inclusive youth work
The project builds the institutional capacity of youth centres and government-run facilities, thus facilitating inclusive youth work and creating equal participation opportunities for women and men and for vulnerable groups. The centres also develop strategies for young people’s socio-economic participation. -
Peacebuilding
The project trains the youth centres in peace work and project management methods and assists them in implementing peacebuilding initiatives in their communities.
Further youth centres are being opened in consultation with the Ministry of Youth. To promote the centres and implement local initiatives, the project cooperates with Moomken Org, a Libyan NGO with which a support agreement has been signed.
