Context

Since gaining independence in 1991, Uzbekistan has implemented significant structural reforms and become Central Asia’s most dynamic country. The transformation has had a positive impact on the economy, politics and society.

After the adoption of the national action strategy for 2017 to 2021, reforms have accelerated once again. The country has not only significantly improved its investment climate, it has also created more liberal, transparent and favourable conditions for entrepreneurs.

With the Uzbekistan 2030 development strategy, Uzbekistan’s government is continuing the transition to a market-orientated economy. The focus is on a green economy, intensive development of agriculture, compliance with international standards and socio-economic planning in all regions – with less influence from central government.

Objective

Local economic development is being driven forward in the regions of Uzbekistan.

Approach

The project:

  1. Expands proven and innovative approaches to create employment and incomes in agriculture, tourism, skilled crafts and information technology (IT); for example by supporting IT schools, the targeted promotion of young women and the gradual development of a cooperative system that enables farming families to earn higher incomes
  2. Contributes to implementing new technologies and structures in production, processing, logistics, marketing, certification and export promotion
  3. Promotes the skills of local actors from civil society, entrepreneurship and state institutions to develop and implement integrated regional development plans in public-private dialogues and contribute to economic policy reform proposals
