Context

In 2018, the Uzbek Government introduced comprehensive reforms to improve healthcare provision for the Uzbek population. The improvements are already evident in the country’s health indicators, such as reductions in maternal and newborn mortality.

Despite this progress, the number of deaths during childbirth is still high by international standards.

Objective

The conditions for implementing the Uzbek Health Strategy 2030 have been further improved.

Approach

The project supports the Uzbek Ministry of Health in improving healthcare for its population. This includes:

  • Expanding the state health insurance fund. Training courses are designed and provided for medical professionals, economists and accountants from healthcare institutions to prepare them for their specific administrative tasks. The training courses for the introduction of the fund are also being used in other regions of the country.
  • Developing study programmes for hospital managers in cooperation with GFA Consulting
  • Improving newborn care in specialised health facilities with the support of the Technical University of Dresden
  • Developing vocational training programmes for medical technicians in collaboration with Mediconsult
  • With the support of the Technical University of Munich, monitoring wastewater to better predict the course of infections. The project also works with the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin, enabling the Uzbek health authorities, through training and other measures, to prevent infections and avoid antibiotic resistance.
