EU4FAST strengthens border security and institutional capacities in the Western Balkans

Handover of equipment

The importance of safe and well-managed borders is central to ensuring security, stability, and the rule of law across the Western Balkans. In this context, strengthened cooperation between partner institutions and international actors remains essential in addressing transnational threats such as migrant smuggling and human trafficking.

Within the EU4FAST project, strategic cooperation continues to support national authorities in enhancing their capacities to prevent, investigate, and prosecute organized crime, while also improving the protection of victims. The project promotes a multidisciplinary approach that integrates prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnership, supported by continuous engagement and operational support in partner countries.

Germany remains a strong supporter of EU4FAST, recognizing that this comprehensive approach is the most effective way to achieve shared objectives related to security, justice, and regional stability.

As part of ongoing support to operational institutions, the project has delivered 30 document verification tools, two heartbeat detectors used to identify persons hidden in enclosed spaces, seven vehicles including four off-road vehicles and three vans, as well as five video cameras. The equipment is intended for the Border Police and the National Unit for Combating Migrant Smuggling and Human Trafficking.

EU4FAST supports partner institutions across the region through capacity building activities, technical assistance, provision of equipment, and the strengthening of inter-institutional cooperation. These efforts aim to enhance the overall effectiveness of the criminal justice response while ensuring better protection for vulnerable groups.

The project is co-financed by the European Union, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Ministry of Interior of Italy, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is implemented by a consortium led by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), together with European partners in the fields of internal security and justice.
