Free public Wi-Fi introduced in 64 municipalities across North Macedonia
The WiFi4WB initiative was officially launched in Kochani, bringing free public Wi Fi to 64 municipalities across North Macedonia. Implemented by GIZ under the EU4Digital project and co financed by the European Union and the Government of Germany, the initiative aims to improve digital connectivity, reduce the digital divide, and provide citizens and visitors with reliable internet access in public spaces.
Access to reliable internet connectivity is becoming an essential part of everyday life, supporting communication, education, business development, and access to public services. A new initiative in the Wester Balkans and North Macedonia is taking a significant step toward improving digital connectivity and ensuring that more citizens can benefit from free internet access in public spaces.
The WiFi4WB initiative was officially launched today in Kochani as part of the EU4Digital project. The project is co financed by the European Union and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
Through this initiative, free public Wi Fi will be available in 64 municipalities across North Macedonia. Citizens and visitors will be able to access reliable internet connections in a range of public locations including city squares, parks, libraries, schools, and cultural institutions.
The initiative aims to improve digital inclusion by making internet access more widely available, particularly in public spaces where people gather, learn, and interact. By expanding connectivity at the local level, the initiative contributes to reducing the digital divide and supporting equal access to digital opportunities.
At the same time, improved digital infrastructure can support local development by enabling municipalities to offer better services and by creating new opportunities for tourism, education, and economic activity. The initiative also strengthens regional connectivity and contributes to broader efforts to advance digital transformation in the Western Balkans.
