Achieving educational goals worldwide

Context

Education is a human right. It reduces poverty and inequality, and promotes gender equality, self-determination, health and peace.

Despite global successes, many challenges remain. The COVID-19 pandemic, crises and conflicts are leading to a worldwide deterioration in the education situation. The global shortage of teachers is also contributing to the fact that many children are being denied access to high-quality education.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) takes a holistic approach to education and promotes education from early childhood through to higher and adult education. This approach supports the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda: Quality education worldwide.

Objective

BMZ and German development cooperation (DC) are contributing to the education goal (SDG 4) of the 2030 Agenda.

Approach

This supra-regional project advises and supports BMZ in implementing the international education goal (SDG 4) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this way, it contributes to the multilateral realisation of German development cooperation in education.

The key measures in this context are

• Providing technical and strategic advice to BMZ on the key areas of education in the context of displacement and crises,
• Fostering inclusive and gender-transformative education,
• Promoting teacher development and digitalisation
• Advising and supporting BMZ with regard to oversight mechanisms in multilateral engagement.

Key implementation partners include the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), the Education Cannot Wait Fund (ECW), the International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 (TTF), the United Nations Girls' Education Initiative (UNGEI), the Global Partnership for Gender Equality in the Digital Age (EQUALS), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the German Commission for UNESCO, the Support her Education Initiative (SHE) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
