Context: Education is a human right. It reduces poverty and inequality, and promotes gender equality, self-determination, health and peace. Despite global success, many challenges remain. Crises and conflicts are leading to a worldwide deterioration in the contributing to the fact that many children are being denied access to high-quality education.
The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) takes a holistic approach to education and promotes education from early childhood education to higher education and lifelong learning. This supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda: Quality Education.
Goal: BMZ and the German development cooperation supports SDG4.
Approach: This supra-regional project advises and supports BMZ in implementing Education as a multilateral priority topic of German development cooperation (BMZ 2030).
Key measures: The project provides technical and strategic advice to BMZ for managing multilateral cooperation, particularly within the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and Education Cannot Wait (ECW), as well as on the following priority areas:
- Education in the context of displacement and crises,
- inclusive and gender-transformative education,
- teachers and digitalization and
- Sport for Development (from 2026).
Key implementation partners include the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and the Education Cannot Wait Fund (ECW). Other partners are the international Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 (TTF), the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and cultural Organization (UNESCO), the German Commission for UNESCO and EQUALS (ITU).
