Context

Germany and Morocco are pioneers of the energy transition on their respective continents. Morocco has enormous potential for harnessing renewables, especially for generating electricity from solar and wind energy. Given its geographical proximity to Europe and the existing electrical power lines, Morocco’s electricity generation could be integrated into the European electricity market. In the long term, this will enable the exchange of environmentally friendly energy for the benefit of both countries.

Morocco and Germany established the German-Moroccan Energy Partnership in 2012. This serves as a central platform for energy policy dialogue between the two countries. It aims not only to promote the energy transition, but also to support Morocco’s progress in this area.

Objective

Morocco and Germany work together to drive forward decarbonisation and strengthen the energy supply.

Approach

The secretariat of the German-Moroccan Energy Partnership supports BMWK and the Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development (MTEDD) in policy dialogue on a sustainable energy and foreign trade policy.

In their partnership, Morocco and Germany share best practices and experiences. The main thematic areas include:

• Electricity generation through the promotion of renewable energy
• Decarbonisation
• Grid expansion and energy market integration
• Involvement of private-sector stakeholders
• Support of the Power-to-X market ramp-up

To enrich policy dialogue, the partnership secretariat organises workshops, studies, training courses and seminars.
